A Mental Retreat

Happy Monday, y'all. How did it go, this beginning of the week thing? Did you feel productive, ready to start a new week of work and writing? Oh, boy did I ever. But I'll tell you 'bout that in a sec.

First: don't forget to enter my 100 Follower Contest! All ya gotta do is put an interesting/off-the-wall interview question in the comments of that post (link's below the image). Winner gets featured in said interview on my blog, and gets a nifty golden flash drive! (Contest ends May 27th)

Second: I'm going largely unplugged this week on account of my handy-dandy

Write Like You're On FIRE Week!

I'm taking a little mental writer's retreat and working daily like them finga's iz on FAHR! My goal is to get this WIP as close to "The End" as possible by Friday. The rules of this mental writer's retreat?

1. WRITE FAST
Pretty self-explanatory, right?

2. WRITE FORWARD
No peeking at past chapters or revising while writing. All forward momentum, babay.

That's it! Simple - and effective. See?

That thar's my word count for today, up about a grand since last count. I might plug back in just to post my progress; we'll see. But while I'm gone, have a chuckle with Doug Clegg's awesome little e-book:

20 Tips for Writers by Douglas Clegg

So, what about you? Got any big production plans this week?

Good luck!

Go get 'em!

Zoe C. Courtman | May 17, 2010 at 6:56 PM

Thanks so much, Stephanie! I'll need it :D Actually, today was a good day - this writing forward without worrying about suckage is actually kind of fun. And productive :D

Zoe C. Courtman | May 17, 2010 at 6:56 PM

Thanks, Alex! GRR!! :D

Alesa Warcan | May 17, 2010 at 7:14 PM

Sounds efficient! I'll toast that undertaking with gasoline.
*Moe Zoe... Moe Zoe! (<-to the tune of woolly bully) Burn baby burn. : j

Here's to you burning up the screen with incandescent words (85000 of them at least) that will flow together like a lava stream that will wreak havoc on the minds of weak hearted readers. : j

Nothing planned here except finally finishing Under the gables this week. And next week I'll be completely disconnected in Rhode Island!

Write forward = old advice being put to good use!

Stina Lindenblatt | May 17, 2010 at 7:48 PM

Good luck! Love the fiery writing. :)

Jaydee Morgan | May 17, 2010 at 8:25 PM

Sounds like an excellent plan - good luck!!

MissV | May 17, 2010 at 8:36 PM

I try to enforce the write forward rule. I can waste hours (who am I kidding? weeks) revising the first chapters instead of finishing the darn book already.

Good luck with the challenge!

Aubrie | May 17, 2010 at 8:43 PM

Good luck with your WIP! Wow, those are fiery words. I can just sit and watch them sizzle!

Flames! You totally weren't kidding!

Sorry I haven't been keeping up. I've been hanging out with The Fam (which includes Feth, my sister AKA your best friend) among a bazillion other blood (allegedly) relatives.

Now, Dad and JP are bonding on the couch.

Remind me to tell you what that my dad's a thief.

Love you! AND your flames!

Zoe C. Courtman | May 18, 2010 at 9:37 AM

Thanks a lot, Alesa. NOW I have Woolly Bully stuck in my head. LOL! Have a GREAT time in Rhode Island - I'm ALL about the unplugging!!

Heather - you visited!! Aw. Thanks for the comment and your undying support (even when all's I can do is drunkenly mumble "MELVILLE!!")

Hey, Stina. I love those flames, too - they're hypnotizing to watch!! Thanks for visiting!

Thanks for the encouragement, Jaydee! I'll need it.

MissV- that's TOTALLY my problem. I'm having trouble with two pesky chapters, and all I'm doing is treading water. So - hell with those chapters! I'm finishing this sucker. I'll figure them out lata!

Lol, Aubrie. Me, too!

Hi, Arnold! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting!!

Lisa!! Oh, MAN it looks like the Last fam's having a blast. I want deets! And more pics! And, hey Lisa? Red Dawg's a thief. Love you, too! (You're STILL my best friend, too. Pbt.)

Giles | May 18, 2010 at 9:37 AM

Yeah, yesterday I only read through four chapters of my WiP. Then I went to a microbrewery with my friends. Not a very productive day :)

Zoe C. Courtman | May 18, 2010 at 9:42 AM

Hey, man. Living counts. It counts! Where else ya gonna get snatches of dialogue, human interaction and, yanno, BEER stories to put into your work?? :D

Sangu | May 18, 2010 at 10:13 AM

Thank you for commenting on my blog, and good luck with your goals!

I think my week actually started off quite productively, but I'm sure it's going to go downhill, as always. Writing-wise, I'm doing zilch, which is always upsetting.

Zoe C. Courtman | May 18, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Thanks, Sangu! Nah, it won't go downhill. We're gonna make this novel thing HAPPEN, right???

Liza | May 18, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Great goal! Go for it!

A Pen In Neverland: Angela Peña Dahle | May 18, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Grrrreat! Oh the progress! I'm sitting in a pile of things to do and busy building an author platform. Blogging. Tweeting. You name it. Oh you mean with writing eh? Ha ha. Yeah. I'm busy on that end too. Picture books galore. Mostly in the editing/revising/tightening stage. Lots of hoops to jump through before they are spic-n-span and splendorific, wonderific awesome! My mind is ready to blow! OH loved your TH. Mafi Contest entry by the way--my favorite there so far. Kudos! I'll be posting mine later.

Thanks, Liza! I'm goin' fer it!

Hey, Angela! Thanks for visiting (just moseyed on over to your blog to follow it, too)! And, aw, thanks for your kind words for my silly entry on Tahereh's contest. Ah, twas fun to jot down whatever came to mind.

Carolyn V. | May 18, 2010 at 1:20 PM

Have a great week unplugging! I'm revising until I'm dizzy this week. =) Good luck!

~Nicole Ducleroir~ | May 18, 2010 at 4:38 PM

Hi Zoe! Congrats on getting so close to the end of that MS draft. Whoot! I love what you said: Write fast; Write Forward. So hard to do, but so important. The perfectionist-editor in my head is looking forward to the revision phase of my project. Patience, I tell myself over and over.

I forgot to mention the first time I commented on your blog, but I live outside Atlanta too. Hubby and I started in Gwinnett, but now live in Jefferson (up 85N, a couple exits past the Mall of GA). It's always great to meet another local writer!

Happy unplugged week, and best of luck with your MS:)

Regina Quentin | May 19, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Just found your blog and I'm glad! I have "focused" the first part of this year on writing, and while I've been "unplugged" I haven't gotten as much accomplished as I'd like. I've come to realize that I work best with 28 things staring me in the face and me buckling down and deciding what to attack first. This week is all about a script I'm working on. Good luck with your WIP.

lbdiamond | May 19, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Nice fire!!!!

I'm doing beta reading this week, then on the weekend and thereafter, I'm back to page one on revisions!!! *insert battle cry*

Palindrome | May 19, 2010 at 4:08 PM

I love your firey words. It makes me happy but then again I just really love fire...and words. :)

Check out my post for today and you'll see my interview with Mr. Clegg.
